I hadn't been to Laguna since June 2009 with Speedventures. That was in the Evo and I got serious brake fade. I'm happy SCCA will be there again on June 17-18 because I was having trouble motivating to find the limit. So I felt slow. Best time of the weekend was a 1:46.6 which is 4s off my best from the Evo. Unlike Sears and Thill, I didn't best my corner speed times by much which accounts for the crappy lap time. That time is roughly equivalent to a top Spec Miata time. I was 3-4s faster than SMs at Thill. Clearly lots of room for improvement. Part of the reason is that I purposely setup the car to understeer by the filling the rear tires with 10% less pressure than the fronts. I also softened the rear compression/rebound to 5 clicks out. Mission accomplished. Car pushed pretty much everywhere. There was also an on track incident between me and the #53 Subaru STI driven by Ron Pippen. We touched my front right to his left rear. Minor fender damage and a change in toe seems to be the only fallout. That and I got stuck in the gravel outside turn 4. Here's the video of race 1; note that I forgot to turn on the camera until after the start. Skip to 18:40 to see the incident: The only apparent damage was a slight indentation in the fender and about 3/8-1/2" of toe-in on the passenger front wheel. Luckily I brought my toe plates and could fix it relatively easily before race 2. Didn't make any other changes to the car for race 2.
